About our Australia-Afghanistan relations news

Latest news on matters concerning Afghanistan and Australia, which occur against the backdrop of a history of military invasion.

As part of The War on Terror, Australia and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom to topple the Taliban Government and deny al-Qaeda a safe base of operations in Afghanistan following the 9/11 Terror Attacks. Australian forces would remain in Afghanistan as part of an international coalition to support the fledgling Islamic Republic of Afghanistan against Taliban insurgents until they withdrew in 2021.

Controversy recently emerged over the conduct of the Australian SAS in Afghanistan following accusations of war crimes in the Brereton Report.
