As part of The War on Terror, Australia and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom to topple the Taliban Government and deny al-Qaeda a safe base of operations in Afghanistan following the 9/11 Terror Attacks. Australian forces would remain in Afghanistan as part of an international coalition to support the fledgling Islamic Republic of Afghanistan against Taliban insurgents until they withdrew in 2021.
