Born in Mashhad, Iran, in 1939, Khamenei was a student of the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, and played a key role in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. He was elected President of Iran in 1981, and served in that role until 1989, when he was succeeded by Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. Khamenei then became Iran's Supreme Leader, a position he has held ever since.
Under Khamenei's leadership, Iran has been involved in a number of regional conflicts, including the Iran-Iraq War, the Iran-Contra Affair, and the Syrian Civil War. Additionally, Khamenei has been a vocal critic of the United States and Israel, and has advocated for the destruction of both countries.
