Latest news on the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), a supranational court established in 1959 and located in Strasbourg, France. It is part of the Council of Europe and is responsible for ensuring that the human rights of individuals and groups are protected under the European Convention on Human Rights. The ECHR hears cases brought against countries that are signatories of the Convention and can make binding decisions in those cases. The ECHR has jurisdiction over 47 countries in Europe and provides individuals with a way to seek justice when they feel their human rights have been violated by the actions of their government.
