About our Eris Variant news
Latest news on Eris, a new variant of COVID-19 that has been detected in several countries, including the UK, Ireland, China, and the US. It is a descendant of the Omicron variant, and has been classified as a variant of interest by the World Health Organization (WHO) on August 9, 2023.
Eris is also known as EG.5 or EG.5.1, and is related to an Omicron subvariant called XBB.1.9.2. Eris has shown increased prevalence, growth advantage, and immune escape properties compared to other Omicron variants, meaning that it can spread faster and evade some of the antibodies produced by vaccines or previous infections.
Eris does not seem to cause more severe disease or different symptoms than other Omicron variants, and there have been no reported changes in disease severity to date.
