About our Lebanon news

Latest news on Lebanon, officially the Republic of Lebanon. Get breaking news and updates on Lebanese politics, economy, and international relations.

Lebanon, facing a severe economic crisis since 2019, struggles with political stalemates and financial turmoil, including a massive currency devaluation and soaring poverty rates.

Recent tensions along the Lebanese-Israeli border have escalated, with Hezbollah and Israeli forces engaged in the deadliest exchanges since the 2006 war, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.

Beginning the 20th Century as a subdivision of the Ottoman Empire, Lebanon became a French Mandate after the First World War until its independence in 1943. Lebanon has been rocked by turmoil and crises, including the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990) and subsequent occupations by Israel and Syria.

Recent years have seen the Cedar Revolution in 2005, the 2011 Lebanese protests, and the 17 October protests in 2019. Currently, Lebanon grapples with a liquidity crisis, with the Lebanese Pound devalued by over 98% since 2019, amidst ongoing negotiations with the IMF for financial assistance. The recent escalation on the Lebanon-Israel border, involving Hezbollah and Israeli forces, intensifies regional instability.
