Major League Soccer (MLS) is a professional soccer league in the United States and Canada. It was founded in 1993 and the inaugural season took place in 1996 with ten teams. MLS comprises 29 teams, 26 in the US and 3 in Canada. The league is headquartered in Midtown Manhattan and operates as a single entity, with each team owned by the league and individually operated by its investors. The league does not use a promotion and relegation system and teams are divided into the Eastern and Western conferences. The regular season runs from early March to mid-October, with the MLS Cup playoffs taking place in late October and November. The team with the best record is awarded the Supporters' Shield and the championship game is the MLS Cup. There are numerous rivalry cups contested by teams, usually geographic rivals, and each is awarded to the team with the best record in regular season matches involving the participating teams.
