Edward was made Earl of Wessex prior to marrying Sophie Rhys-Jones in 1999. The couple have two children: Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor and James Mountbatten-Windsor, Earl of Wessex. Edward was conferred the additional title of Earl of Forfar in 2019. He was created Duke of Edinburgh for his lifetime on his 59th birthday, a title previously held by his father and briefly by his eldest brother, Charles, after their father's death in April 2021.
