Russian/North Korean relations date to the end of the Second World War, when the Korean Peninsula was divided along the 38th parallel, with the Soviet Union occupying the north and the United States occupying the south. This division set the stage for the creation of North and South Korea.
During the Korean War, the Soviet Union, along with China, provided significant support to North Korea, commitment which continued throughout the Cold War.
In the 21st century, Russia has reestablish diplomatic and economic ties with North Korea, through projects such as the Rajin-Khasan railway link and the Rason Special Economic Zone.
On 12 September 2023, Kim Jong-Un arrived in Russia as part of a six-day diplomatic visit, during which the North Korean Supreme Leader met Russian President Vladimir Putin and visited key military and technology sites. The visit sparked fears in the West about weapons transfer deals between the two countries.
