The modern Olympic Games were first held in 1896 in Athens, inspired by the ancient Greek Olympics. The Olympic Games are normally held every four years, alternating between the Summer and Winter Olympics every two years.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is the governing body of what is known as the Olympic Movement, with the Olympic Charter defining its structure and authority. The IOC oversees the awarding of Olympics hosting rights to cities around the world.
